Nairoshi foundation – a good cause

This week we want to present one incredibly good cause for the people of Kenya or more specific the Maasai culture. Kenya is one of our favorite destination countries, so rich and colorful. So, we think it is important to know more about the culture itself and the Nairoshi foundation, which supports the young population of the country.

Maasai culture

The Maasai culture is practiced in the biggest part of Kenya. These indigenous inhabitants are spectacular to watch and explore their way of living. They are differentiated by their clothing and the popular traditional dances. Big groups of tourists are rarely accepted near these villages. That is how the Maasai kept their authenticity and live their lives as they want.

However, during my visit, I was well accepted and lived for a couple of weeks in one of those villages and get to know the culture. I spent the time at the Nairoshi Foundation, so I was within the locals. I learned so much about the lifestyle and the challenges of the Maasai people. Families usually have multiple children, and the conditions are not the highest. Most of the time families don’t have enough resources to send all of their children to get a proper education.  The lack of support has great consequences. They go to school for some time and then stop.

There is a gap between high school and college when the education is paid, and most families cannot afford that. Usually, young girls are arranged for marriage and to have children. Here comes the Nairoshi Foundation which supports the younger population of Kenya to be more educated and have a choice of different opportunities.

Nairoshi foundation

The Nairoshi Foundation is an organization in Kenya that is supporting the younger generation of the county to get a proper education. They often stop going to school at a young age around 13 tears old. The Nairoshi Foundation is rewarding these kids with entering and graduating higher education levels like high school. They are supported by donations and sponsors who are willing to give enough to change their lives and give them more opportunities.

Their mission is to support families living in hard conditions and change their lives and futures for the better. The projects of the foundation are all community-based. They are focused to improve the quality of life of the Maasai people in southern Kenya. There are three main projects at the moment. The Maasai widow program supports women in hard times. It is hard for them to support their children on their own so they are usually forced to stop their children from school so they can help the family. Therefore, the Nairoshi Foundation accepts these children to gain higher education as well as provide employment opportunities for widowed women.

Another project is the ‘Hope’ Academy which is a school build by the foundation to ensure education for children who don’t have access to such a ‘privilege’. Last but not least, they support students or young children through their academic development. After they finish the Hope Academy these children get support and the resources to go to high school and university. The Nairoshi Foundation is supporting numerous boys and girls to pursue their dream careers and get more future opportunities for success.

Better life

Kenya is one of our greatest photography destinations. We all love the landscapes, the culture and locals, and it’s wonderful wildlife. So Travelmarks Photography is supporting organizations like the Nairoshi Foundation that can improve the way of living in the country. Their mission is a great cause that needs to be followed. We want to see this better future for the children and  to make sure they have options in life like more career opportunities. Many girls are dragged to marriage and early pregnancy which can be changed. You can easily donate any resources so they can fulfill their dreams or become a sponsor which means that you will support a child in need through its education like high school and university. Together we can do it possible for many more young children of Kenya.

Photography trip to Kenya

Kenia, a country with numerous national parks and colorful wildlife. One of eastern Arica’s most dynamic destinations. Today we present our extended trip to Kenya. In a couple of months, we are going to be free to travel and gather exciting memories. Kenia as a destination might be one of the first ones to go overseas.

Kenia photography trip

As you may know, we already are offering a photography trip to Kenya. The richness of nature and wildlife is one of the treasures Kenya is offering. We are going to explore the culture, way of lifestyle and return home with the most incredible photographs. The culture behind Masai people is once in a lifetime to witness. We are having a private session with the so-called ‘Masai warriors’, where you can capture the beauty of this incredible culture. They are not used to communicate much with the outside world, and they prefer to stay away from tourists. Despite this fact, we have established genuine connections within the local culture so we can have this opportunity.

On the other hand, the national parks in Kenya have been a great attraction for people all over the world. They show so much of the nature and wildlife of the country than anywhere else. It is always great when we can watch wild animals in their habitat, like hunting lions or tall giraffes walking around. A challenge when it comes to photographing them. It would take some time and patience for the perfect photo shot, but it is worth it.

Kenya trip will be extended

Announcing great news, the trip to Kenya will be extended and filled with incredible experiences. We just cannot take enough from this amazing place. This country has so much to offer and explore so we will provide more days at the different locations. We will be able to focus in-depth on the Masai culture and the indigenous people around Kenya. Watching the traditions in action and the different lifestyles always brings powerful emotions. In this way, on the other hand, we will have more time for what we love, photography.

As we know, the perfect shot may take some time, the light, the composition, or something else. We can take our time and take the best shots from different angles. The opportunity to go to more photography locations and shot different subjects, from stunning landscapes to wild animals. Besides, we can spend more time with the local people and getting to know this diverse part of the world.

Sneak peek on Iceland photography trip

This week we are presenting a little preview of what is happening behind the scenes. As you already know we are planning a summer trip to Iceland for the future. Here you can find a sneak peak of some of the most exciting places we are going to visit.

Iceland in brief is a country with a colorful and dynamic landscape, from hills to canyons and hundreds of magical waterfalls. There are so many places we want to explore within this destination and see the beauty of nature through our lenses. Let’s have a look at some of these photogenic places.

Kirkjufellsfoss

Iceland’s waterfalls are all amazing and exciting to photograph. Kirkjufellsfoss is in the foothill of a beautiful mountain called Kirkjufell. This is one of the most photogenic mountains in Iceland. With its shape this mountain has great value in your photo background. The waterfall composed in the shot with this stunning landscape would bring the best shots, the view is speaking from itself.

Hverir

Hverir is a geothermal area in the foot of the beautiful dark mountain Namafjall. This phenomenon includes great landscapes and fumes which gives a great view. The colors are extraordinary and very interesting to work with for the best pictures. The cracks in the area are creating the land unique and very photogenic. A lot of fumes are showing in this land which gives great opportunities for pictures. Last but not least, the mud pools are a must to be seen as well as photographed in closer shots.

Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon/Diamond Beach

Jokilsarlon Glacier Lagoon or nicknamed the Diamond Beach is a lake filled with meltwater from an outlet glacier. These icebergs are sometimes relatively big with clear colors mostly in bright white, however with the skylight and water reflection there are a lot of blue tones within. The lake is spectacular to photograph as well as witness. It can be a challenge for photographers but in the end the results are incredible. Playing with the colors and the whites, every shot is unique and tells its story.

Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon

The magnificent canyon Fjaðrárgljúfu is a great feature of Iceland beauty. You can approach it from below or on the upper route depending on what kind of shot is planned. It could be a challenge to find the balance between the highlights and the shadows but the outcome would be incredible. There is an opportunity to change perspective and shoot very different photographs within the canyon. When the sun touches the cliffs, and the reflection in the water from the river inside, creates the best feeling.

Seljalandsfoss

Seljalandsfoss is the name of one of the most attractive waterfalls in Iceland. Easy reachable by the road we will be able to visit this unique destination. It is famous for its shape and points of access. In other words, we can walk around the waterfall and find different angles and perspectives to photograph. The most attractive place to photograph is actually behind the water where you can play with the light and water into the right composition. Sounds exciting right? One more thing, do not forget your water-resistant clothing and gear because it can get wild.

New destinations coming up

Travelmarks Photography is ready to travel again. These extraordinary times during the Covid-19 pandemic are useful to search and develop new photography trip destinations for all travel and photography enthusiasts. We haven’t forgotten about you and we can’t wait to present our two new destinations coming up soon – Iceland and Senja island Norway.

Iceland

Iceland has been on our minds for a while, now we are developing a new photography trip to select the most interesting photogenic places within the country. It is one of the countries which are present in almost every traveler’s bucket list, crystal blue water, beautiful hills, and waterfalls make it paradise. When you hear Iceland, you may think of the Instagram picture of the Blue Lagoon, the most famous place, and quite crowded. However, Travelmarks Photography is searching for the most authentic places, hidden spots which has the qualities for great shots.

The exact locations will remain a secret for now but expect the unexcepted, the wait is worth it. These locations are picked to be accessible and easy to reach. Therefore, we are talking about great waterfalls, hills, and caves which will not only take your breath, but you will be able to capture the moment in a photograph that you want to show to everyone. In addition, Iceland has great National parks which are a must to be explored.

Norway

We have seen the beauty of Norway and we want to include new areas for photography, which have the same character but different. Travelmarks Photography is traveling already to the central part of the country or the Rondane National Park. Nevertheless, we want to explore the beauty of the north, which we believe the best location would be Senja Island. This is the second biggest island in Norway, sided by the Atlantic Ocean. With the wild diversity of mountains and hills, the landscape is incredible to watch and photograph.

Going on North the chance of taking the best photo of the Northern Lights is very high. This is one of the most famous phenomena in Norway and it is spectacular to be seen. As travelers, we keen on going on adventures, see and memories as much as possible.

Senja island has all of it. It is favorable to photograph the mountains and hill landscapes, as well as the higher the better the northern lights, can be seen. Besides, small villages and shipping docks have all the color and sight of the culture of the country. Last but not least, the plenty of beaches are great for sunset and sunrise photography.

Brexit for Ireland and Northern Ireland

The world is constantly changing, now one of the biggest news in Europe is Brexit. This post is about the current situation between The United Kingdom and Ireland. Two different countries, one island, and now just one of them is in the European Union. What will change from now on?

Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland trip

Travelmarks Photography is offering a photography trip to Ireland and Northern Ireland, a combination of city photography and nature and landscape. Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland is the starting point which is great for architecture and portrait shots. On the other hand, we head to the north where the breathtaking nature is dominant- hills, mountains, and waterfalls are just amazing for photography. However, there may be some changes in the future due to the recent leaving of the United Kingdom from the European Union.

Brexit

As we all may know, the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union, which now is a fact. Officially from 1st February, 2021 UK is not part of the European Union, but some changes are in effect to Ireland and North Ireland. The conflict is that the Republic of Ireland is a European country whereas the Northern part of the island is British territory. This area has been known as Common Travel Area, which is an agreement settled by both countries to ensure that British and Irish citizens can move freely within the island as well as including the right to work, study and vote in certain elections, as well as to access social welfare benefits and health services.

The Northern Ireland Protocol

After the adaptation period, Brexit is official and applies from 1st February 2021. What will this mean to Northern Ireland and the Common Travel Area agreement? Following these events, the Northern Ireland Protocol will turn into effect from this date. The Agreement commits UK and EU to maintain an open border on the Island. There will not be an official hard border and citizens from the UK and European Union will be able to cross freely. The Northern Ireland Protocol states that all the benefits and respects in this area will be continued with an extension of the Common Travel Area rules application. There will be a difference in the imported and exported goods between these countries because of EU food standards and checkups, which was not necessary when the UK was a European country.

What does this mean for the European traveler?

As we mentioned already there won’t be major changes in traveling between the two countries. Moreover, The Northern Ireland Protocol is aiming to avoid a physical border between Ireland and Northern Ireland. Regarding visas and passports, there will not be any immigration control points. However, since you might not get checked as a traveler you should carry your passport with you entering Northern Ireland.

Besides, before traveling you are recommended to have health insurance. Your European Health insurance card (EHIC) will ensure your health insurance only in the Republic of Ireland. As the UK not being part of the EU, these rules do not apply. Visitors should arrange for themselves health and travel insurance while visiting the Northern part of the island. Always check with your insurance provider before the trip.

New photography workshop Maastricht

Scouting Maastricht

Welcome everyone! We are working on something new coming up on Travelmarks Photography very soon. This will be a new photography workshop destination – Maastricht.

Sneak peek what is on the menu

The capital of Limburg, Maastricht, is great for city photography with bustling city center and mixture of old and new architecture. Moreover, it is surrounded by beautiful nature and famous national parks.

Reserve naturelle de Eijsden

We started out with some morning nature shoots outside the bustling city, in the ‘Reserve naturelle de Eijsden’, which is located right next to the border with Belgium. The park is occupied by diverse animals, walking around you. We were lucky to see and photograph the wild horses in their natural habitat.

Basilica of Saint Servatius

Later we head to the heart of Maastricht, the Basilica of Saint Servatius located at the famous Vrijthof square. This building is one of the most beautiful and majestic in the town. Entering the Basilica, you will be amazed by all the colors and religious items. Photographing the basilica inside is a perfect way of playing with colors since the building is closed and very little light is coming through the glass painted windows. This is the time to play with the settings of the camera!

Gouvernement

Further we visited the Gouvernement, it is an iconic building representing Maastricht. Surrounded by water and blossoming trees makes it perfect for photos. The interesting architecture is as challenging as exciting to photograph.

Sint Servaasbrug

Photographing the oldest bridge in the Netherlands sounds good right? It is still in use for pedestrians, and it is an icon for the city and Limburg province. You can approach the bridge by many angles and find the best for a shoot. Photographing the surroundings can be amazing addition to your photo combining the bridge with the reflection in the water.

Brunssummerheide

We are combining all kinds of photography in our workshops and last but not least we are finishing with nature shots. The Brunssummerheide is a national park near the city. After exploring the city, it is time for quiet time and outdoor photography.

Travelmarks can’t wait to travel again!

This week we would like to share some positive news with you! You will undoubtedly know what the situation looks like in the Netherlands, but what does it look like in other countries at the moment? We are happy to answer this question.

Asia Photo Travels and Tours

Of course we keep a constant eye on the developments and the corona situation in our destination countries. We work very closely with local entrepreneurs in our destination countries. In this way Travelmarks-Photography supports local and smaller companies. A perfect example of this is Win, our guide in Myanmar. Win himself works for Asia Photo Travels and Tours and therefore knows all the tricks of the trade when it comes to photography.
You can see one of his own photos on the left.

Covid-19 in Myanmar

People soon think that in a country with more than 56 million inhabitants many infections will take place, but nothing could be further from the truth. Myanmar, also known as Burma, has more than 113,000 corona infections counted so far. Just for comparison: In the Netherlands this number is currently about 5.5 times as large. In addition, fewer than 3,000 people died from the virus during the entire pandemic. This is also a very low number.

As a result of the amount of infections, the government in Myanmar revoked a large number of corona measures earlier this year. Public transport is slowly starting up again and shops and restaurants have also opened their doors again. A mouth mask is also mandatory here everywhere. The government itself indicates that it can properly control the virus and the local population is also looking forward to a return to normal life.

Travel restrictions

Of course it is not yet possible to travel. Nevertheless, we remain positive! As soon as it is allowed again, this is one of the countries we want to travel to again. They also need us very much as Myanmar is very dependent on tourism.

For now we will unfortunately have to wait a while, but we are eagerly looking forward to 2021 when hopefully much more will be possible.

Photography tour through the Benelux

Good news! For 2021, workshops will be developed throughout the Netherlands and there will even be a photography trip through the Benelux! The current situation is of course very unpleasant for everyone. As a travel lover, you have of course noticed that already. Time to change that and spread some positive energy.

We have already visited a few places that should not be missed during a photography trip. As soon as it is possible again, we will scout new areas in the Benelux.

Of course we will continue to inform you about this. Let's start with two areas that we recently scouted when we were allowed to.

Maastricht

Maastricht should of course not be missed during a photography trip through the Benelux. Due to its location, Maastricht is easily accessible from neighboring countries. In addition, the city is known for its cosiness and the historic city center. Definitely worth a visit!

The oldest bridge in the Netherlands, the St. Servatius Bridge, can be seen in Maastricht. This bridge can be photographed beautifully from multiple positions. It is certainly worth waiting for the golden hour, it creates a beautiful picture. The famous Vrijthof square cannot be missed in the city center. Despite the fact that it is often busy during the day, it is the perfect place for photography during the blue hour in the evening.

In addition to these famous sights, there are of course many more photogenic places to be found. These are often less crowded and are therefore absolutely worth it for photography! After all, the 'secret' spots are often the most beautiful.

Posbank & The Veluwe

The Posbank is a 90 meter high hill located in the Veluwezoom National Park. From here it is possible to see tens of kilometers away. The national park covers over 5000 hectares and is part of the Veluwe, an even larger nature reserve. The area consists of moraines formed by glaciers from the Ice Age. A very special view!

This national park is a mecca for photography. Each season has special properties. Whether this is the flowering heather, a snowy landscape or the beautiful autumn colors, nature will never disappoint you. The park is therefore not only a popular destination during the high season. That is why this destination will certainly return in the photography trip.

As you can see, we have been very busy lately. Despite the current situation, we hope to welcome you again soon during one of our photography trips.

5 facts about Ireland & Northern Ireland

Ireland… People often think about an Irish pub or the delicious Guinness beer, but Ireland has so much more to offer. In addition, Northern Ireland is also one of the destinations that people don’t often think about when they’re planning a trip. In this post, you will therefore read 5 things you did not know about Ireland and Northern Ireland.

1. Dublin

People usually know that Dublin is the capital of Ireland. They often also know that the city has impressive architecture. But did you also know that Dublin was founded by Vikings more than 1000 years ago? They looted surrounding coastal towns and had their 'home base' in present-day Dublin. The history of the city is cherished to this day.

Furthermore, the story of Dracula was also written here. Although Dracula is of course from Transylvania, his writer studied in Dublin. Every year a festival is organized in honor of the author and his literature.

2. UNESCO World Heritage

Ireland is the second largest British island, making it one of the largest islands in Europe. Ireland is of course known for its coastlines, but there are also a lot UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Many special destinations have managed to secure a place on the World Heritage List and that’s something many people don’t know about. These places are mainly along the coast.
This also applies to Northern Ireland.

3. National Parks

Ireland has 6 National Parks. Many people therefore know that Ireland has beautiful nature. Nevertheless, fewer people know that certain parts of this nature are also protected. In addition, there are dozens of nature reserves and other nature areas where protected animal and plant species live.
Northern Ireland doesn’t have National Parks but also has plenty of beautiful nature reserves.

4. Game of Thrones filming locations

Fans of the Game of Thrones series will know that the series was filmed in breathtaking locations. The first thoughts often go to Dubrovnik in Croatia and Malta, but there are also a number of beautiful film locations in Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is also sometimes referred to as: 'Game of Thrones territory'. These locations cannot be skipped during the photography tour in Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Four of the many film locations are visited during the photography tour. This includes the locations of Dark Hedges, Inch Abbey, Tollymore Forest Park and Murlough Bay. Discover perhaps the most beautiful beech avenue in the world and wonderful parts of the Irish coast.

5. Titanic

The story of the Titanic is known worldwide. Did you know that the Titanic was built in Northern Ireland? Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, is therefore a city very associated with this story. Here you will find the largest Titanic museum in the world and the place where the Titanic was actually built. In addition, there are many guided tours to follow. You can even sail on the same water as where the Titanic did. A very special experience!

And there are many more interesting facts… In short, enough to discover in (Northern) Ireland. If you’re interested in these countries, we would be happy to take you on a photography tour through Ireland & Northern Ireland. After all, they are very special destinations!

Autumn in Norway

Norway is known for its untouched nature. Large waterfalls, glaciers and mountains are often the first things that come to your mind when you think of Norway. It’s absolutely a wonderful destination for nature lovers. Every season has its own charms, of course, but we prefer to travel in autumn. Read here what makes autumn in Norway so special!

Rondane National Park

They say you will enter a kingdom of nature when you visit this park. The Rondane National Park is Norway's oldest national park and covers an area of over 900 square kilometers. It is also quite centrally located in the country. Almost 85% of the national parks in Norway are covered with mountains and so is the Rondane. 10 mountains even rise above 2000 meters. You will not find an incredibly colourful plant kingdom here. The park is mainly covered with forests and grasslands. However, these landscapes can also be beautiful. Especially in autumn, the park is decorated with the most beautiful colours. These create a magical atmosphere in the park even on cold and cloudy days.

The park is also home to moose, reindeers and Scottish highlanders. The chance of spotting these animals is considerably higher in the autumn than in the rest of the year. In the spring and summer months the animals move to remote areas. So another plus for the fall…

Dovrefjell

Next to Rondane is Dovrefjell National Park. This park is known for being the best place in Norway to spot the famous Musk Oxen. They live in the wild and can therefore be spotted in their natural habitat. These impressive animals can weigh over 400kg and are not shy. Photographing the Musk Oxen will certainly not be a problem. In addition, September is one of the best months of the year to spot them. Furthermore, there are of course also many other animals to see such as arctic foxes and a lot of different bird species.

The vegetation is also low in this park. This also creates rugged landscapes that look a lot friendlier in the warm autumn colours.

Northern Lights

It’s one of the most special natural wonders of the world ... The Northern Lights. Almost everyone has seen photos of it at some point, but actually being able to experience it is a completely different experience. Norway is one of the best destinations worldwide to see this lightshow. That’s because you have to be located north of the Arctic Circle. The lights are also only visible when it’s dark enough on cloudless evenings. While the ideal time to spot the Northern Lights is in the winter months, it is also possible to catch a glimpse of this lightshow in late fall.

In short, enough reasons to plan a trip to the north. It’s therefore not surprising that Norway is one of the most popular destinations for nature lovers. If you still want to see the beauty of this country with your own eyes, we would like to take you on the next photography trip in Norway!
