Tips for photographing with filters

Whether you’re shooting landscapes, cityscapes or wildlife, photography filters are an indispensable tool for many photographers. They help you control contrast, reduce reflections and enhance colours – all without post-processing.

Understand the different types of filters

There are three filters that you as a photographer should definitely know:

  • Polarizing filter (CPL): Reduces reflections on water and glass, and makes skies a deeper blue. Ideal for landscapes.
  • ND-filter (Neutral Density): Darkens your image evenly, allowing you to use longer shutter speeds for images such as silky-smooth water or moving clouds.

  • GND-filter (Graduated ND): Has a gradual transition from dark to light – perfect for balancing a bright sky and dark foreground.

Use a polarizing filter for more color and contrast

A polarizing filter is most effective in bright sunlight. Turn the filter until you see the sky darken and reflections disappear. Note: the effect is strongest when you photograph 90 degrees from the sun.

Extend your shutter speed with ND filters

ND filters are essential for creative effects with movement. Think waves that fade into a dreamy haze or busy streets where people fade into shadows. Use a tripod and a remote control or timer to avoid motion blur.

Balance your exposure with GND filters

At sunrise or sunset, the difference between sky and landscape is often great. A graduated neutral density filter (GND) helps you to bridge this contrast. This prevents your sky from becoming overexposed or your foreground from disappearing into the dark.

Switch to a filter system for flexibility

Screw-on filters are handy, but if you use multiple lenses or work with multiple types of filters, you are often better off with a rectangular filter system. You slide filters into a holder in front of your lens – handy and efficient.

Keep your filters clean

Dust, sand and fingerprints can ruin your photos. Bring a microfiber cloth and store your filters in a protective case. Regular cleaning is essential, especially in humid or dusty conditions.

Practice at home before you go out

Filters take some practice. Try them out in your own environment first, so that you know what you are doing while taking pictures. This will prevent frustration and failed photos at that one perfect moment.

Filters aren’t magic tools – they require knowledge, preparation and patience. But using them well can effortlessly take your photography to the next level. So pack those filters, get out there and let your images do the talking!
